IELTS Writing Task 2: Bài mẫu về "Genetic Engineering"

Genetic engineering is an important issue in society today. Some people think that it will improve people's lives in many ways.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is widely believed that genetic engineering presents humankind with a great number of benefits. I completely agree with this assertion and perceive that our agriculture and the climate would be immensely leveraged.

As farmers are relying heavily on hazardous pesticides and fertilizers in order to sustain susceptible plants, the introduction of gene engineering could be beneficial to the world’s farming. Firstly, with the help of this technology, scientists might be able to manipulate farming crops by adding special traits beneficial to humans, reducing the reliant on agricultural fertilizers. For example, plants which produce new types of nutrient, such as tomatoes with higher antioxidant levels or rice with additional vitamins, can be highly conducive to the fight against lethal illnesses, namely cancer or heart attack. Secondly, instead of using poisonous farming chemicals, genetically modified plants can be vaccinated and immune to pests or viruses. This has been linked to the deterrent against the utilization of farming antibiotics and insecticides by farm owners, triggering the outburst of perennially safer, healthier and more reliable food sources for consumers.

Alongside with better farming properties, genetically modified crops could have the potential to revolutionize our methods of actively protecting the environment. If engineered plants can be made more resilient to climate change, such organisms can better adapt to erratic weather and adverse soil conditions derived from our irresponsible farming behaviour. This means genetically modified trees, with bigger roots, stems and canopies, could be applied in protection forests as an effective way to prevent natural and man-made hazards, including rockfalls, floodings, erosions or even avalanches. Besides, nitrogen is a commonly used fertilizer for agricultural purposes, however, this type of chemical contaminates groundwater and speeds up pollutions. The practice of establishing genetically engineered plants able to absorb nitrogen naturally from the air could significantly reduce the overuse of artificial nitrogen in developed countries, thereby reducing our negative effects on the environment.

In conclusion, although gene technology can be considered as unrealistic and hard to believe, the returns, in my opinion, could be promising and worthwhile.
